Robert O. Becker, MD, explored new pathways in our understanding of evolution, acupuncture, bioelectric phenomena, and healing.
The letters MD after someone’s name carry a lot of clout in this day and age. The medical doctor is still very much seen as an authority on what it takes to be and stay alive in this world. I get these prolific shockwaves of joy when I come across an accomplished, conventionally trained medical doctor who has gone beyond the appearance of what we perceive with our five senses and elucidated the truth of the energetic basis of life. Enter one such individual who has blessed the world with his magnificent contributions to medicine over the last 50 years: renowned American orthopedic surgeon, researcher, and author, Dr. Robert O. Becker. Born in 1923 in River Edge, New Jersey, Dr. Becker spent his entire career at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Syracuse, New York, where he served as chief of orthopedic surgery and chief of research. He was also head of a research laboratory devoted to studying the role of bioelectrical phenomena in growth and healing, tissue regeneration, infection control, and the health impact of artificial environmental electromagnetic energy.
This research and his books on the subject are what brought him the most notoriety during his life and since. He was interviewed by Dan Rather on the CBS television show 60 Minutes for his expert opinion on the effects of low-level electromagnetic radiation (EMR) that would be emitted by Project Sanguine Antenae, a submarine communication grid in the 1970’s. He also testified before Congress on the effects of EMR on the human body.
His studies have had a major impact on our comprehension and understanding of the functions of electrical currents and activity in the human body, tissue regeneration, and healing. His two books, The Body Electric and Cross Currents, are fascinating works that give a much greater understanding of how our bodies react and interact with the electromagnetic field. Some of Dr. Becker’s contributions include the following:
- Electromagnetic Fields and Healing: Dr. Becker’s research focused on the influence of electromagnetic fields on the body’s healing processes. He conducted groundbreaking experiments that demonstrated the importance of endogenous electrical currents in tissue regeneration. His work suggested that the body’s own electrical systems played a crucial role in repairing and regenerating damaged tissue.
- Bone Healing: One of Dr. Becker’s notable contributions was in the area of bone healing. He conducted experiments that showed how weak electrical currents could stimulate bone growth and fracture healing. His research led to the development of innovative therapies, such as pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy, which is used in clinical settings to promote bone healing.
- Limb Regeneration: Dr. Becker’s work extended to the study of limb regeneration in amphibians. He explored the role of electrical currents in the regeneration process and sought to understand how these principles might be applied to human tissue regeneration. While his research did not result in the ability to regenerate human limbs, it advanced our understanding of regenerative processes.
- Bioelectricity and Medicine: Throughout his career, Dr. Becker advocated for the recognition of bioelectricity as a crucial factor in medicine and healing. He believed that understanding and harnessing the body’s natural electrical properties could lead to innovative medical treatments and therapies.
- Books and Publications: Dr. Becker’s work was widely disseminated through his books, including “The Body Electric” (1985) and “Cross Currents” (1990). These books explored the relationship between electricity and biology, sparking interest and discussions in both the scientific and alternative medicine communities.
Dr. Becker’s courageous work has significantly advanced our knowledge of the role of electrical energy and voltage in biology and healing. Yes, some of his ideas were considered controversial and debated (attacked) within the scientific community, but it is undeniable that his research has left a lasting impact on fields such as orthopedics, regenerative medicine, and the study of bioelectricity. His legacy continues to influence research into the body’s electrical properties and their therapeutic applications. You are an energetic being. Your truest essential nature IS energetic. Embrace that and allow the electrons to flow into your life- I promise you’ll appreciate the effects.
